Wine at the Spirit of Texas Winery

 Day 1 -- July 30, 2021

It's hot in Texas, and we think a trip to somewhere on the Enchanted Circle in northern New Mexico with its cooler climate would be a more enjoyable.    The Circle includes starting at Taos, then Hwy. 64 N to Hwy. 522 N through Questa, continuing on Hwy. 38 E to Red River, then south to Eagle Nest and Angel Fire and Hwy. 64 W back to Taos. The RV park where we stayed before in Red River would be our first choice, but it is already booked.

So we'll see where we land.

Driving "Sweet Georgia Brown" from our country home RV park in Livingston just before noon, we see that the temperature is 90 and feels like 103.  We change from drinking hot coffee to ice water.

This is our first trip in Sweet Georgia Brown with the new rear view camera that Herb just installed.  Works great!

In Onalaska we see there is a KOA RV park, and make note that we might stay there some day, as it is not too far away.  Crossing the Trinity River, we continue on US 190 to Point Blank TX and get a great view of the water, which reminds us of our boating days in the Pacific Northwest.

We travel through the city of Huntsville, where there is a huge statue of Sam Houston, but we don't see it today, because it is in another part of town.  I am reminded that he was an American general.  An important leader of the Texas Revolution, Houston served as the first and third president of the Texas Republic of Texas, and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate.

After lunch at a Rest Area in Huntsville, we drive toward the exit and see that it is blocked for several minutes as workers change a light bulb in the street lamp.  a kind gentleman from the oversize truck comes up to our window to say it will be only five more minutes.  He comments that he is patient, because lights are needed for safety.

We are members of Harvest Hosts, which invites one to park at no charge on their lot (with no hookups) and ask that you spend at least $20 in their winery.  Our first Harvest Host visit is to the Spirit of Texas Winery in Early TX near Brownwood.  Their motto is "Relax and Unwined with us."

At cocktail time we are welcomed into their restaurant by Moira and Brian McCue, owners, and are seated at the bar.

We make our selection of wine, and choose pizza as our entre.  Our server, Liz, (shown below) is quite efficient and when she learns that we are from south of Houston, she tells us she will soon start Nursingl School at UTMB in Galveston, studying to become a CRNA, certified registered nurse anesthetist.

As I photograph the bottle we chose, Moira comes by to grab some wine glasses for other guests.  We will definitely plan to visit here again on our return trip to Texas.

  1. Thanks for letting us share your travels. On a side note, Sam Houston had beautiful penmanship. Never used guidelines and was a real master of quill and ink. I belonged to the Houston Calligraphy Guild for many years and studied his writing style, most from a tent by lamp light or in adverse conditions out in the field.
