"Some (Don't) Like it Hot!"

Day 24 -- August 22, 2021

Yesterday 44, and today 53 degrees?  It's getting warmer?  Wouldn't you know it would happen just as we have to leave The Enchanted Circle and make our way back to our home in Texas!  Later in the week the high will be around 80 degrees, but we must go.

I see a nice red glow at 7a as the sun climbs up behind the mountain in the view from Sweet Georgia Brown's windshield, then is high in the sky when we get ready to begin our trip.  The clouds show that it is breezy, but not unsafe for travel.

We get one last look at the village of Eagle Nest, as we make our way at 9:30a.  Friends have told us they have gotten a nice view of Eagle Nest Lake from the other side of where we stayed, so as we head toward Cimarron, we look back.

The highway ahead is a twisty windy with the beauty of nature; even the burned trees show their strong structure.

From Cimarron we turn right onto State Highway 58 toward Springer, and now get into the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.  Here we have wide open spaces with mesas, ranch stype farm houses, and cattle.  The agriculture appears to be hay for the animals, as well as corn.

We notice the temperature rises as we come down off the mountains, and onto the plains. The dashboard air conditioner is cooling all it can -- which is not enough, so near Clayton NM Herb turns on the generator and I turn on the house units to make us more comfortable.  Yes, we are getting near Texas.

We have lunch in the town of Hartley, south of Dalhart TX, and arrive to Texoma RV Park in Dumas at 3:30p Central Time.

This is another free park, provided by the city, with a donation box to help them with the cost of electricity.

Children have plenty of playground equipment to keep them happy, while their family parks the RV here, and I suspect youngsters from in town enjoy it also.  Oh, and I see (and hear) a freight train coming nearby.

I will explore the playground tomorrow.

  1. You must have driven by the Philmont Scout Ranch. Our youngest son, Jason, and I...along with his Scout Troop, did a 62 mile trek there in 1974. Wonderful memories!
