Cliffs Formed 40 Million Years Ago

 Day 12 -- August 10, 2021

This morning we have another cool start to the day at 54 degrees at our elevation of 8,240 feet.  It is partly cloudy for a time, then soon cleared.

Wondering if there is another RV park in the Cimarron area, we drive the scenic highway through the Cimarron Canyon State Park and locate one, but it is way too small for Sweet Georgia Brown to be comfortable.

Passing beautiful rock cliffs, I do notice some burned trees on one hillside, but I don't see any fireweed flowers.

Seeing the sign for a historical marker ahead, we are intrigued, and read about the Palisades Sill:

"These spectacular cliffs are cut by the Cimarron River through igneous rock known as a sill and composed of the rock type monzonite, which was emplaced some 40 million years ago as these Southern rocky Mountains were being uplifted.  Elevation 8,000 feet."

I am totally amazed as I ponder this information.

The Burrito Banquet restaurant is a food truck and not open for lunch, but I must stop for a photo.

On the drive down the mountain to Angel Nest RV Retreat, I get another view of the Eagle Nest Lake and a sharp curve.

We are lucky enough to find one restaurant in Cimarron that is open and the sign gets my attention -- Cree-Mee Drive In, showing a burger and ice cream.

It no longer is a drive in; it is a drive up and park, so we do and have a delicious lunch.

  1. Just wandering is a fine way to travel. It's been a few years since we wandered around through New Mexico. Not sure what your schedule is, but the Balloon Fiesta in Albuquerque (Oct 1 - 10 this year) is a real treat. Enjoy your travels!
