Over the River and Through the Mountains - 10/3/2012

It is time to say Goodbye to Russ and Toni, and we leave Chinook to cross the Columbia River into Astoria OR and head south.

Willie's Tug Emerges

Today we see the river at low tide, and as we pass the sand bars, we understand why the ship channel is closer to the Oregon shore.

Astoria Bridge

Sandbar

We get another look at the beautiful city of Astoria.

Logs

Down the highway a bridge is being prepared for sandblasting, with tarps hung overhead, and a flagman asks us how wide we are -- eight and a half is good!  We are waved through.

If Willie's Tug had wheels, we could eliminate the red pickup for towing.

Sad to see the firetruck ahead and the burning Volkswagen.

Then a happier sight and aroma -- a truck full of purple onions overtakes us en route to market, and I think of Inez's broccoli recipe.

Purple Onions

I love the tree farms along the highway, and would like to know what they are and what they are used for.

  1. You made great time. Somehow it is much easier to find Willie's Tug among motorhomes. I am sure she will be steering you towards water soon. Best, Cindy and Gerry "Celtic Sun"
