Day 41 - Wednesday, August 24, 2022 - Part I
Walnut Hills Campground and RV Park, Staunton VA
Brrr - it's 62 degrees, and one of the coldest mornings of our trip. Perhaps the elevation of 1,417 feet has something to do with it. And the temperature drops to 61 as we begin our morning walk around the park. Yes, it must be cold, because Herb is wearing a vest.
There are two sections of the park and we are parked in the lower one with fewer trees where Starlink can see the satellite. The photo below shows Herb leaving our section to turn left to pass the office and go up a hill to the other area.
Next to the campground, there is a private residence with different colors of Adirondack chairs along a narrow brook flowing down the hill. It looks like a nice place to sit and drink coffee as you watch the morning sun come up. I do see some walnuts on some trees here in Walnut Hills Campground.
Following a loop on a rural path, we see that one or more trees have been recently cut, possibly due to a lightening strike, and I think there will be a repurposing of the wood during the upcoming winter.
In the terraced residential area we see a cabin with a deck that has a spectacular view of the lake down below, and a whimsical carving on a petrified tree.
One of the hills is so steep I have to take baby steeps to keep from tumbling head-first all the way down. On my next walk, should I avoid this area?
The parking sites in most campgrounds are designed for the RVs to go in at an angle, whether it is a pull-through or a back-in. Note the sign by Sweet Georgia Brown's site that points to 'One Way.' This is so that an RV can come in easily to their site from the back. Hosts use a magic marker to mark a site map and give to the guest, showing the direction we should go to our site. Following the directions and one way signs assures us we can 'slide' right into the site.
We are back from our walk and after breakfast we'll drive the Jeep on Skyline Drive of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
